Geographic Information System (GIS) Department
The GIS Department deals with Remote Sensing, Mapping, and GIS services, and provides customized spatial products and services to support other CETRAD departments, as well as other institutions and organizations dealing with a wide range of social, economic, and natural resource management activities. The Department provides a high-quality mapping services to public and private-sector customers, and maintains a large database of geo-referenced digital topographic maps covering over 80% of Kenya and 30% of Tanzania. The CETRAD GIS lab is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, that it uses to collect and transform information about the ASALs into accurate mapping and GIS products.

CETRAD runs a rich hydromet data and information base generated from its long term and comprehensive monitoring network in the upper Ewaso Ngiro North river basin. Most of this data is now linked through a real time transmission system and interfaced to its database as well as to some selected Water Resources Users Associations (WRUAs) in the upstream areas.
