The KCEP-CRAL is a project within the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives State Department for Crop Development and Agricultural Research financed by; the Government of Kenya, IFAD Loan, IFAD- ASAP grant, IFAD country grant for county capacity building, the private sector, and beneficiaries. It is implemented in the eight counties of Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kitui, Machakos, Makueni, Kwale, Taita Taveta, and Kilifi, and focuses on smallholder farmers whose livelihoods revolve around maize, sorghum, millet and associated pulses residing in 34 sub-counties of these eight Counties. KCEP-CRAL brings together a number of partners to implement various components of the project based on their areas of expertise.

CETRAD is a partner within the Natural Resource Management and Climate Change - NRM/CC component and is mandated to establish county GIS/RS units, capacity building and backstopping the counties in executing spatial data management and related activities.

Achievements:

  • Conducted GIS/RS needs assessment for the eight counties
  • Established 17 fully equipped GIS/RS units – two in each county and one at the
  • PCU in Nairobi
  • Trained 73 county officers on GIS/RS
  • Trained 221 officers on data collection using smartphone technology
  • Spatial data collection field surveys
  • Backstopping the counties – refresher trainings
  • Developing a sustainability strategy for the established county GIS/RS units
