The Springs Stewardship
The initial pilot area for the Springs Stewardship will remain the Gambella wetland in the lowlands of the Ngare Mara sub-catchment that drains the western slopes of the Nyambene ranges.

The initial pilot area for the Springs Stewardship will remain the Gambella wetland in the lowlands of the Ngare Mara sub-catchment that drains the western slopes of the Nyambene ranges. This will however be expanded to cover additional wetlands upstream – Matiru and M’Alaigwa – and the degraded hillsides of the Nyambene ranges in order to give the intervention a catchment logic and make it holistic in approach. This will imply a broader geographical and thematic scope than initially planned during the proof of concept phase. Therefore, the main activities will include

  • Comprehensive assessment of land degradation in the Ngare Mara catchment.
  • Socioecological assessment of the two additional wetlands that will support
  • Development of integrated wetland management plans for each wetland
  • Strengthening of water management and governance at grassroots level, starting with the Waso Mara WRUA.

The Integrated Wetlands Management Plans will form the basis for a long-term intervention Programme for the wetlands and the entire sub-catchment. Both incubator projects have a mix of components with activities that are constantly evolving.
