This is a cross-cutting project with research as well as transfer components. The project is funded under the auspices of the Swiss Universities Development and Cooperation Network (SUDAC) and involves five Swiss institutions namely

  • Centre for Development and Environment, University of Bern (lead)
  • Hochschule für Technik Rapperswil (HSR), University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland (FHO)
  • Swiss Peace Foundation, University of Basel
  • Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (TPH), University of Basel
  • Institut Sekundarstufe II, Pädagogische Hochschule (PH) Bern; and two centers from Africa, CETRAD and Water and Land Resource Centre (WLRC), Addis Ababa University, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Thematically, the project is framed around the land-health-conflict nexus in order to interrogate the trade-offs between SDGs 3, 15, and 16 in Kenya (Moyale-Isiolo transport corridor) and Ethiopia (Awasa-Moyale transport corridor) in view of the recent infrastructure developments and their effects on land-use change, health, social inclusion. This is done in the context of highland-lowland systems with smallholder farmers, pastoralists, and investments in different sectors under focus. It builds on collaborative partnerships to enhance societal dialogue and support policy processes, and aims to develop and test novel transdisciplinary strategies for data and knowledge sharing.
